Zihuatanejo Sunset Cruise on the
Picante Catamaran
posted October 29, 2007

We booked our Zihuatanejo one-week vacation at Club Intrawest one year ahead. Nicely planned as our Fall getaway, it was intended as a break from the cold and wet Vancouver weather.

A lot of things can happen during that period. We certainly did not expect that the night before we leave for our holiday, both my husband and I would come down with the cold. And who could have foretold the weather forecasts for Zihuatanejo for that week - scattered thunderstorms. What choices do we have, faced with prepaid, non-refundable airtickets and accomodations, but to soldier on.

We arrived on Sunday late afternoon, and went to bed early, nursing our cold. Monday, both of us woke up, pleasantly surpised. The hot warm air of Zihuatanejo magically took away our sniffles. And yes, while there were clouds in the sky, the sun was strong enough to penetrate through, and we could still feel the sun and the warmth.

We spent our days in the beach, walking, swimming in the warm waters. We could see the yachts anchored out in the bay, and wondered what it would be like to sail around Zihuatanejo Bay. There was only one sailboat cruise listed in The Lonely Planet, which is the 75 ft camataran called the Picante.

The Picante offers a 5 hour sail and snorkel excursion from 10am to 2 pm, and a Sunset Cruise from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. We thought it would certainly be a highlight of our trip to go on the Sunset Cruise. At a published rate of US$50 per person, we gave it a try!

The ride was very smooth and comfortable. There was no wind, the captain had the engine running, but all sails up. We saw dolphins swimming.  The crew was hardworking, entertaining and very accommodating.

We Sailed around Zihuatanejo Bay, got a close up look at the "Las Escolleroas" rock formations, saw the tropical bird sanctuary. We met some honeymooners on the trip, and several tourists from Ixtapa. We exchanged stories, took photos, and got so immersed in conversations. The trip was truly enjoyable, and the people you meet along the way can be a bonus! Would we do it again? For sure, yes. Would we recommend it? Yes.

The Picante cruise company also offers day sail and snorkeling trips and parasailing adventures. Depending on your travel itineraries, other adventures might be more suitable. The sunset cruise we took is ideal for land travellers who've been staying at hotels, and want to try out the waters and get a closer look at the islands nearby. For passengers on cruise lines, you've been in the water and watching the sunset everyday, it might be better to explore land adventures, and step on land for a change.
