It is easily the friendliest marina you can ever visit.  Folksy Bill and Jean Barber - the owners since 1992 make sure that every visitors get the royal welcome here at Lagoon Cove Marina.  

Every afternoon at 5:00 pm, the marina holds a finger food-potluck  at its big room/workshop.  For the potluck, the marina provides fresh cooked prawns from their daily catch.  When everybody is full and happy, legendary Bill entertains guests with his famous BEAR stories, filling the room with laughter.

Free wireless internet is provided at the workshop, where  yacht club burgees hanging on the ceiling and the walls.  An extensive collection of books and magazines are available at the bookroom on a 1 to 1 exchange.

It is a First Nations community along the British Columbia coast.   There are only about 200 band members (Gitga’ata of the Tshimhian Nation) in this village, and another 500 members who live or work in Prince Rupert, Vancouver or other regions.   

Hartley Bay is accessible only by air or by water.   There is a passenger ferry and seaplane service from Prince Rupert.   It is a recommended stop for boaters traveling the inside passage to Alaska.  In 2008, a cell phone tower was installed so boaters can have cell phone receptions and wireless internet.

A very pretty village, it has a church, community center, school.  The entire community is built with wooden boardwalks.  There are no gravel roads.  Residents travel by scooters, ATV – all terrain vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles.  Houses are kept very neat and clean.  Residents are very friendly.  Another notable feature is that the village is declared &quot;dry&quot; - no alcohol.

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and glaciers, this could easily be set in Banff National Park.  Right by the shore is an odorless hot springs encased by natural boulders and concrete slabs put together by the natives.  The tub can easily hold up to 10 people.   A very secluded place, there are usually no one in sight.   The water temperature on the tuub is completely adjustable and only takes minutes to completely heat up or cool down. The trail is easy and beautiful.  Across the tub on the shoreline across is a grassy meadow, where bears can be spotted feeding on salmon.  Just like a private performance for your eyes only.

This crescent-shaped island is situated just off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, approximately 180 miles by water from the city of Vancouver. Located on the beautiful Inside Passage of British Columbia, Alert Bay can be reached by taking a 40-minute ferry ride from Port McNeill.  

Alert Bay has a population of about 1700 people, with about 1,000 First Nations residents and 700 white people.  The town is very picturesque and full of history.  Residents are proud of the First Nations heritage and are  very friendly to visitors.

There are many reasons to visit Alert Bay.  Its beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, native culture, history, saltwater fishing.....  Alert Bay is known as the &quot;home of the killer whale&quot; and has the tallest totem pole in BC.  It also has an excellent First Nations museum containing potlach paraphernalia that were confiscated during the early 1900 in an attempt by the white settlers and the missionaries to assimilate the native Indians as they call &quot;remove the Indian out of them&quot;.  Some of the items on display are letters by Indian chiefs protesting the confiscation.   

In August 4, 2007, Oprah Winfrey paid a visit to Alert Bay. The talk show host went to the small community on the yacht Nova Spirit owned by BC billionaire Jim Pattison. She walked through the area without security or body guards, posing for photos with fans. Namgis First Nations Chief Bill Cranmer gave the celebrity the town tour and invited her to a potlach organized by his band.
